what is surrogate grandparents?
Surrogate Grandparents is a New Zealand based Charitable Trust (CC54933) that works to connect families with older people - it may be that the grandparents don’t live nearby or for whatever reason families don’t have the amount of contact with their grandparents that they would like. The arrangement is incredibly beneficial - families gain loving support and older people feel a sense of purpose and belonging from the relationship.
What problems are we helping to solve?
Surrogate Grandparents was born out of a desire to address loneliness in New Zealand and recognised that this loneliness is as real for under-supported parents as it is for older people. Social isolation and loneliness are much more serious than just uncomfortable feelings... Research has shown that social isolation and loneliness has been linked with increased mortality, depression, high blood pressure and dementia. Social isolation and loneliness are problems that people struggle with right across New Zealand's social demographics on a daily basis.
Surrogate Grandparents matching process builds loving support networks for families - the bonds that form then address issues of social isolation and loneliness.
How can Surrogate Grandparents help?
Surrogate Grandparents is the bridge that connects generations. By connecting families with surrogate grandparents and grandparents with our children; we can fight social isolation and loneliness in New Zealand. Working together, we can make New Zealand a more caring and connected nation.
what our members say
Our members have made some amazing connections and have expanded their families through our Family match programme. Here’s what some of our members have to say….
Jo & TIM, Wellington
“Having not had a mother through my journey into motherhood I decided to bite the bullet and sign us up, and it’s been one of the best things we could have done. We couldn’t have asked for more from our Wellington based 'grandies' who join us for our son's swimming, we do lunch dates, and sometimes they look after M to give us a wee break. I believe that the connection created has been a win-win for all of us.”
Helen & Peter - wellington
“Got the loveliest flowers and card from our wee family from Karori thanking us for taking a dive into surrogate grandparents. We love our wee family to bits they are so precious. We see them every two to three weeks and appreciate them including us in so many activities we always learn more and get to love them more and more. so grateful for all you do. May you continue to have encouragement”. Helen & Peter
KATE - christchurch
“Not having my parents close by is heartbreaking... but you have helped turn it into a blessing because we now have surrogate grandies to be part of our lives; to share in the special moments and to form lasting bonds with our daughter. Thank you surrogate grandparents NZ!”
